Key Verse: “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:25)

Reflection Questions:

  • How is “fruit” as the result of ministry different from “the fruit of the Spirit”?

  • Who possesses the qualities of the fruit of the Spirit?

  • How can the fruit of the Spirit be produced and grow in your life?

Today’s Bible passage begins with the word “But” to contrast the works of the flesh mentioned earlier. The word “fruit” here is singular, referring to one fruit of the Spirit that contains nine virtues or qualities produced and matured by the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer. This fruit can continue to grow in us even when we are physically unable to serve—perhaps confined to bed and needing care. This is different from the “fruit” or “results” in ministry or evangelism, which are external. Such outcomes can happen in both believers and even those who do not belong to Christ—like the false prophets on the last day who will say to the Lord: “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?” We may recognize these as people who bore much “fruit,” but Jesus will say: “Depart from me, you evildoers. I never knew you!” (Matthew 7:22–23).

So, the fruit of the Spirit tells us who we are, not simply what we do. Who, then, possesses the qualities of this fruit? Verse 24 says: “Those who belong to Christ.” Earlier, the Apostle Paul describes them as those who are both redeemed by the Holy Spirit and walk in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:16).

Paul points out that the fruit of the Spirit is such that no law—either God’s or man’s—can prohibit it (v. 23). Then he makes this appeal: since “those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires,” let us “live by the Spirit” and also “keep in step with the Spirit” (vv. 24–25, NLT). When we receive Jesus as Lord, our flesh and its deeds are crucified, and the new life of the Holy Spirit flows in us. Therefore, we must follow the Spirit so that His beautiful virtues may be produced and grow in our lives.

Many people memorize Galatians 5:22, but the issue is not memorization—it is living by and walking with the Spirit. No matter our circumstances—whether healthy or ill, or serving in any ministry area—may we always remember that our old self has been crucified with Christ. Let us rely on the Holy Spirit to live and walk according to Him, so others may see Christ in our lives.

Does your life reflect the qualities of the fruit of the Spirit? Why or why not?

Let us pray:

Dear Holy Spirit, please help me crucify my old self with Christ daily. Grant me the strength of the Holy Spirit so that the fruit of the Spirit may increasingly grow in my life.
